Midwives care for women and their babies through pregnancy, labour, birth and for the first six weeks after the baby is born.
Midwives provide free care to Ontario women. Women do not need an Ontario health card to get free midwifery care, but may have to pay for hospital stays and laboratory fees.
Midwives believe pregnancy and birth are normal and healthy. All routine prenatal tests are offered and explained thoroughly to allow women to make their own choices. Women choose to see either a midwife or a doctor for their pregnancies, not both.
Midwives believe women should have the choice to have their babies safely at home or in hospital.
Midwives believe women have a better experience when they know their caregivers before labour starts.
